Shooting from a winner's perspective

Shooters: Sarah & Dave, Annette, Pete H, Adam & Andrew, Dylis, Pete S, Dave & Anne, and last but by no means least (if not a little late so Sarah had to (reluctantly) take his place), DJ.

Well, what can you say! Annette did it again, with yet another superb evening out. The weather was great, with hospitality to match. We were split into two groups, each team being taken away by an instructor to shoot a few rounds, in practice for the competition later. We all tried to find out what the competition from the other team was like, in true Olympic style. Most of us had never done this type of thing before, and were having trouble getting to grips with the terminology let alone the equipment. Bullets and shells were some of the less technical terms we used for 'cartridges'.

Things were looking good at the start for Annette's team, with their ringer Adam shooting nearly everything in site, though peaking early doesn't win the Olympics! Then surprisingly (or not) we found that Pete S had done this before, and he also started hitting everything in site. Anne showed us that shooting runs in the family, as she took some last minute tips from her daughter (a member of the club) and avoided shooting a butterfly that flew in her path as she was taking aim.

After practice, and missing lots of clays being launched from all directions, we were finally ready to enter the competition. So the pressure was on. We took on 5 different 'sets' for the competition, which varied from launching from behind, to bouncing along the ground (these are called "rabbits" and if anyone wants to try rabbit pie, come and ask me to shoot a few). During the competition, we realised that Andrew was the one to watch, Annette wasn't doing to badly either. Perhaps we won't mention Pete H 's efforts, he's going to stick to diving! Occasionally some of us almost looked professional. Personally I found it easier to close my eyes, pull the trigger and hope for the best!

When the competition was over, everyone was eager to find out who had won. Don't you just hate it when the one person who really doesn't want to join in is the one that wins. Yes that was me! True Olympic style, both Dave (that's my husband Dave, not the other one!), were presented with our medals and a bottle of wine, (looks like shooting types drink as much as diving types!) Finally we all adjourned to the final hide for some food, and a little merriment. Once again, our thanks to Annette for the organisation.
