CHAIRMAN'S CHAT

The diving season is well underway now and so far all the trips have been a success. The visibility in our oceans seems to be taking longer to improve this year maybe due the exceptionally mild spring weather we are having. So mixed blessings at the start of the season.

The social scene is also bubbling so to speak. All I can say is that Annette is doing a marvellous job so let's support her and join in.

What's Bubbling is the magazine of the Club and does an excellent job of telling everyone what the Club has been doing and what it will be doing in the future. It cannot rely on one person to write all the articles though. It needs you, the members, to provide those articles, trip reports, news etc. So keep those pens writing, those fingers tapping the keyboards or whatever and get stuff to Dave for WB.

April saw the regional meetings of BS-AC in our area. It was unfortunate that no one from the Club managed to attend due to work commitments (dammed inconsiderate - getting in the way of diving) despite our intentions. However I did talk to Mike Crampton, our Regional Coach, just prior to the meeting and tendered our apologies. He was good enough to give me a broad outline of what was going on. The intention was to elaborate more on the recent changes to Instructor training and qualifications as there was still some perceived confusion, and also to add more detail to the revised diver training soon to be implemented. Information relating to both can be found later in this issue of WB and you will probably have gleaned a lot from the latest 'Dive' magazine. If have any questions please ask Fletch or me and we'll see if we can answer them. Broadly speaking I think BS-AC has gone a long way to changing the training to what the members wanted whilst also adapting to the needs of new trainees and modern trends - the phrase " evolution rather than revolution" seems to sum it up well. The ability is now there to mix and match training between schools and clubs and between club style training and SDC's. as appropriate.

I recently attended the User Forum at the Ken Marriott Leisure Centre. These meetings happen every 3 months or so between the management of the Leisure Centre, a representative from Rugby Borough Council and members of groups who regularly hire/use facilities. Much of the discussions do not affect us as we use limited facilities, however, it is interesting to hear what is going on. Key issues which have come to light that may affect us are future alterations to Reception including the provision of turnstiles and the looming threat of Wetside Changing Rooms refurbishment. It is good to be able to influence some of these matters before rather than after the event. Work on the changing rooms has been delayed since mid February due to contractual disagreements but will probably start over the next month. In any event to be completed by the summer it must start before May 13th as work will take approximately 12 weeks. If May 13th cannot be maintained work will be postponed until the autumn. The effect on us will be changing in the dryside facilities and restricted access to our kit, which will be stored further away and be slightly less accessible. I am sure Michael would appreciate your co-operation, particularly when hiring kit for open water. If any of you have any constructive points that need raising at this sort of level, please let me know. The next forum is scheduled for some time in June..

That's enough from me this issue or there won't be room for anything else.

Bob
