West Midlands Coaching Scheme News

from Regional Coach Mike Crampton

Skill Development Courses

Coaching Scheme Courses have continued to be popular with almost all the advertised events running, some with quite big numbers, and several additional events being added to the programme. The most popular courses continue to be Oxygen Administration, Practical Rescue Management and Combined Nitrox. At the time of writing the courses advertised for the West Midlands all have spaces, please see the separate page for details of courses available and how to book.

In Branch Courses are being encouraged by BSAC and are now proving popular. In some cases branches have the Instructors and equipment to run the courses themselves in which case it is simply a matter of registering the course a few weeks before the event.

Inter-Branch Courses: Where branches do not have the Instructors themselves or only have small number taking the course the benefits of a larger event by joining with other branches are often of great. Pooling of resources and the interchange of ideas have made these events popular in many area's. Although a course is registered as an in branch event it can have members of several branches attending. You can either approach other branches yourself or contact the Area Coach who has the details of the branches in your area, they can also help set up meetings with other branches and help set up the courses. Instructors from the coaching team are able to help on the events, obviously subject to availability.

I would like to see many more advanced divers in the region, there are many good divers who are well up to completing the skills. Remember the Boat handling course does not require diving skills, members can complete this course as soon as they join BSAC, most of the other courses can be taken by Sports Divers, it is often beneficial to take the courses early in diver training.

Go forward, we need Divers and Instructors to continue their training.
