JOTTINGS

The Editor's bit

Hi again and a belated Happy New Year to you all.

This issue is a bit thinner than usual when it comes to Club affairs and news, perhaps not surprising as this is a pretty quiet time of year. Lots of planning seems to be happening on the trip from however, and 2003 looks like it's going to have its usual excellent mix with something for all. This issue does contain a summary of the latest BSAC Incident Report. It's good to see that fatalities were down last year and that, despite what some newspapers would have you believe, if you take care and 'follow the rules' diving is still a pretty safe activity.

Planning is something I need to do also. With my MA now all finished (the final piece of work is being marked at the moment) I may have a bit more time this year for some diving. I say 'may' since this was also the idea last summer - I actually finished up doing just four trips to Stoney and that was it. First though, for once I am going to escape a chunk of the British winter and escape to the Far East for three weeks. It's a non-diving trip, but I may be able to bring back some bits for the next mag.

Reading Bob's AGM report it is interesting to see some things discussed many years ago coming round again, including the possibility of making more use of Draycote. It is also good to see a fitted VHF being provided at last on the RIB. This again has been discussed in the past and was voted down.

Talking of Bob's bit, the while the Committee needs some stability it also needs an injection of new blood from time to time. This idea of shadowing an existing Committee member if you're interested in a post is an excellent. However, it must not be the case that it 'shadower' automatically steps into the role come the AGM. If anyone else suddenly decides they want to stand, they must do so and should start equal.

Anyway, enough from me! So, get planning; support those trips and make 2003 and good year.

As ever, may you bubbles ever upwards go.

DAVE
